In late May, a courageous 10-year-old Yorkshire Terrier named Spike sacrificed his life to save his beloved owner.
While Louise Grobler was on the phone, a venomous cobra appeared on her property in South Africa.
She was so engrossed in her conversation that she didn’t even notice the snake slithering toward her. Spike, on the other hand, sprang into action without hesitation.
He confronted the cobra, killed it, and saved Louise’s life. Sadly, one of the snake’s lethal fangs had pierced Spike, and he couldn’t be saved.
Louise paid tribute to her brave dog, referring to him as her hero. If Spike hadn’t leapt to her defense and killed the cobra, she believes she might have been bitten too.
After the incident, the family suffered another loss when their other dog, Prinses, was also bitten by a snake and died.
Louise and her family had taken in Prinses several months earlier when her former owners abandoned her.
Although she was only meant to stay with them for two weeks, they grew attached to her and couldn’t bear to let her go. Prinses eventually gave birth to four puppies, but the family gave them to a dog shelter.
Spike and Prinses were laid to rest in separate graves on the family’s property, side by side in their front yard.
Louise and her son Mariska were overcome with grief during the burial. However, their loving family will never forget the bravery Spike displayed that day, and they will always cherish his memory.
